I encourage you to read the reviews from those who made it through 4 months of GPR with me to see if this is worth it to you or not. In the past most participants used Radan or ReflexW software, with a few using the Ekko-Mapper and whatever the software is that Mala uses these days. I have a great teaching assistant who knows all these software programs much better than I do. He will be helping the small groups during the week, with some “sitting in” by me. We will also be using Surfer for map making. Many people have access to that important software package. Last year there was a GIS contingent who figured out how to do many things in some of those software packages, and while their results were a little “clunky’ in my opinion, it worked for them.
You can see that this workshop is NOT for the uninitiated. Participants are encouraged to have a year or two of GPR experience, both in data collection, data processing and interpretation. There will be some preliminary meetings in the first few weeks to get everyone “on the same page” but then we will move quickly with various processing and interpretation techniques. I tell everyone to fasten their seat belts when we start in earnest in January.
We will also be integrating magnetic surveys with GPR surveys in the latter weeks of the workshop, for those of you that are interested in that aspect of geophysics.
Every week I will present a new site to the group and tell everyone what tasks I think will be necessary. As a group we will come up with a “to do” list for each project together. I have not yet chosen the datasets for this year. They will come from projects I have done over the years and will probably be from all continents (except Antarctica). Each will necessitate a different data processing and analysis methods for getting results. The “one size fits all” type of data processing that many manufacturers teach their beginning users will very quickly be shown to be lacking for what we need to accomplish. Each week is a new adventure in GPR.
We are fortunate to have a really great organizer and helper for the small group sessions, who has been with us for two of the previous workshops. He was the expert we all relied on. Even better, he is extremely good at the nuances of most of the software for GPR that any of us would use: Mohammed M. Ali AL-Hameedawi
Workshop attendance is limited to 35, but there will be a waiting list. The workshop begin Friday Dec. 12 with an introduction, and there will be another short background session on Dec. 19. I will then give attendees a dataset and readings to do over the holidays and we will begin in earnest on January 9, 2026 with everyone presenting their results so far.
